What we do

The Carl Zeiss Foundation’s mission is to create an open environment for scientific breakthroughs.

As a partner of excellence in science, it supports basic research as well as application-orientated research and teaching in the STEM subject areas (science, technology, maths and engineering).

Funding is primarily divided into the three programme lines of BREAKTHROUGHS, PERSPECTIVES and TRANSFER.
In addition to the three programme lines, the Carl Zeiss Foundation promotes Germany as a research location and supports universities in the three funding countries in appointing top international researchers.

The Foundation also provides support via start-up funding for a limited period of time (IMPULSES) and via targeted one-off funding measures.

The Carl Zeiss Foundation is a funding institution in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia. It is one of the largest and oldest private foundations which provides support to scientists in Germany. The projects are funded by the dividend payments from both of the Foundation companies.
